OUR STORY

Our family tradition of making Sorghum Syrup goes as far back as 1912 with Henry Schlieckau. Over 100 years of sorghum making secrets have been shared generation to generation.

Henry Schlieckau settled on land just outside of Loganville, WI, in the 1880's. In 1912 Henry bought the original sorghum making equipment and showed a peak of interest in making sorghum.

On the same farm, in approx. 1930's, Henry, in turn, taught his son August Schlieckau (Eldest son of 10 children) the learned secrets of sorghum making, including how to best press the sorghum cane and how to cook the sap into the best all-natural tasting sweet sorghum syrup.

During the Great Depression, the Schlieckau Sorghum operation began to take off. Sugar was in short supply at that time and sorghum was a sought out supplement. Over 200 families from all around the area (Sauk County and other surrounding counties) would bring their sorghum cane to be processed by the Schlieckau family. This enabled the Schlieckau's to keep the family farm during these hard times.

During the 1950's the tradition was passed down to Walter Schlieckau (Eldest son of August Schlieckau). In the 1980's is when Walter, continued passing down the legacy and shared the family cooking secrets and handed over the equipment to David Schlieckau, his eldest son.

Today David keeps up the family tradition on the same family farm, sharing the tricks of the trade with his daughters: Lora, Heidi, and Kristine and their growing families. The grandkids are eagerly in line to learn the family traditions of making Schlieckau sorghum syrup.

David currently only produces  a small crop of about an acre of sorghum cane each year. So make sure to get your order in before this year's batch is gone. Sorghum making time is near the end of September and sometimes early October.

Thanks to his daughters, Schlieckau Sorghum is now sold in a few local stores, a few craft fairs/flea markets, and as you can see...we're now on the World Wide Web. It is our hope that many people around the world will taste and enjoy our family's SWEET SORGHUM SYRUP, cooked the Schlieckau way.
